Geometric Sequences with a Surd Ratio

A common ratio can be a surd; multiplying by it twice multiplies by a whole number

Finding the ratio

A geometric sequence multiplies by the same number each time, the common ratio. Divide any term by the one before to find it.

In , 2, , 4, … the ratio is , and confirms it. A surd ratio works exactly like a whole-number one.

Every second term

, so multiplying by twice multiplies by 2. Every second term is twice the term two places before it: 4, then 8, then 16.

The terms in between carry the : , then .

The nth term

The nth term is . Here and , so it is .

An even power of is a power of 2: . An odd power leaves one over: .

A missing term

If 1, x and 3 are consecutive terms, the ratio from 1 to x equals the ratio from x to 3: . Multiplying both sides by x gives .

gives 1, , 3, multiplying by each time. works too: 1, , 3 multiplies by . A question says x > 0 when it wants only the positive one.

Ratios less than 1

The sequence 3, , 1, … divides by each time, so its ratio is . Rationalized, that is : multiply top and bottom by .

The next term is .

Adding the terms

Collect the whole numbers and the surds separately. .

The usual slips

Subtracting to find the ratio. is the gap between two terms; a geometric sequence divides.

Counting each as a 2. has ten factors of , which is only five factors of 2: 32, not .

Squaring instead of rooting. means , not 9.

Your turn

1.The sequence , 5, , … has nth term . What is term 8?
