Two laps a day, and the marker that says which.
am names the lap before noon, and pm the lap after
A day runs in two laps of twelve. The first lap is am: 7:00 in the morning is 7:00 am.
The same 7:00 comes back in the second lap, after noon: that one is 7:00 pm.
Noon itself is 12:00 pm, and midnight is 12:00 am — each is where one lap hands over.
